LeMoyne Crematory, Washington, PA
After residents in the community kept getting sick, many dying, with similar symptoms, Dr. Francis Julius LeMoyne suspected it was related to the burial practices and set out to build a crematory. This building would be the first in the United States, as the practice wasn't looked favorably on. Between 1876 and 1901, the crematory performed 42 cremations, including that of Dr. LeMoyne. Today, tours of the facility are held on the second Saturdays of May to September, from 2p,m to 4pm.
