Rideau Canal, , Canada

This historic canal is an immense feat of 19th century engineering. Constructed in 1832, the canal system stretches from Kingston to Ottawa and joins a series of lakes and rivers, making it a haven for boaters. Whether visitors travel by their own boat or rent, the many locks en route provide moorings complete with campgrounds, accommodation, barbeques, picnic facilities and more. The canal is also intertwined with cycle routes, hiking trails and neighborhoods. In winter it is turned into the world's longest ice skating rink.
